Creative Loafing: Eager to Please By Emily Horton
I recently discovered it's possible to feel more comfortable and at home in someone else's neighborhood restaurant than in one of your own. The possibility you've put down roots in the wrong niche of town notwithstanding, it's tempting to wish the place away somewhere closer to home. If my fleeting wishful thinking ever materialized, you'd find Muss & Turner's smack in the middle of Midtown next week. More>>

“These guys know their stuff” gush groupies of this “gourmet” deli in Smyrna that dishes out “amazing” sandwiches that “always hit the spot” and arguably the “coolest takeaway”, even if it is “a bit pricey”; “witty” menu descriptions of the “creative” offerings can “make deciding difficult” for some, but the “helpful” “owners and employees love their work” “and it shows”, N.B. beer and wine is served on the premises but no longer sold retail.

Ever wonder just how kinky your favorite chef can be? I'm not talking dainty floss-like thongs dangling from the walk-in's upper shelf - but given the proper set of circumstances - just how risky is he or she willing to be with your food? And what wildly obscure morsel is he or she playing with during those arduously long lab hours? Recently, I set out to answer these questions and stumbled across a small handful of local chefs hiding a trick or two up their sleeves.

ATLANTA MAGAZINE "Best New Gourmet Shop" in Metro Atlanta
Muss & Turner's Simply more passionate and skillful than most comparable gourmet markets, this exceptional chef-run, multifaceted spot has taken the neighborhood by storm. Signature deli sandwiches featuring exclusive meats, quality carryout, unique cheeses and small but unexpected selections of wines and spices get all-around raves.

Muss and Turner's It takes a lot to drag me beyond the Perimeter to eat, but this -- simultaneously Atlanta's most authentic and creative deli -- is worth the trip. Besides offering fantastic sandwiches like the lamb burger and a classic Reuben made with corned beef imported from New York's finest supplier, the deli prepares amazingly good vacuum-sealed meals you reheat in boiling water. No tapas.
CREATIVE LOAFING Rates M&T Best Deli in Metro Atlanta. The perennial complaint of New York transplants is the lack of a good deli in the Atlanta area. Todd Mussman and Ryan Turner changed that this year when they opened MUSS & TURNER'S in Smyrna. More >>
ATLANTA MAGAZINE "TOP 10 NEW RESTAURANTS" in Metro Atlanta
Muss & Turner's To call this new deli and gourmet market a restaurant may be stretching the definition. But with more chef power per square foot than most intown bistros and a consuming passion for food, the place is a dream come true for this fast-growing area of town. Co-owner/Chef Todd Mussman and his crew bend over backward to share their love of top ingredients in anything you can eat on premises or proudly carry home. What Makes It Special: Pedigreed ingredients, enthusiastic cooking and respect for the customer. What to Order: Fantastic signature sandwiches with a Boston twist, homemade tagalong cookies, vacu-pack gourmet entrees to take home. When To Go: Throw away those leftovers in the refrigerator and shop for tonight's dinner.
ZAGAT 2005/2006 Top- notch noshes reign at this Smyrna surprise, a deli and specialty food shop owned by Todd Mussman (ex Fifth Group) and Ryan Turner, with super sandwiches crafted from high-end fixings (meats are roasted in-house and even mayo is homemade); communal seating extends to an outdoor patio, and the counter service is fast, but take time to browse since you'll stumble upon edibles like the Chocolate Elvis- chocolate challah bread with peanut butter and banana.

Muss & Turner's is a dream come true for the residents of an area sometimes referred to as Smyning. The culinary passion of Chef Todd Mussman, formerly the strongest star in the Fifth Group family and last seen at Sala Sabor de Mexico , is a huge asset for this handsome new specialty shop-cum-deli.
When he is not creating a fantastic lamb burger (the meat comes from the stellar Heritage Farm on the bread from the Art of Baking) or tweaking northern-style sandwiches such as a Reuben or grilled marbled rye, Mussman improves on the Girl Scout Tagalong cookie, makes his own pickles, tastes cheeses (more about that later), and is generally everywhere. With the help of a crew many will recognize, he is busy developing lovely salads and vacuum-packed gourmet entrees that are a cinch to reheat. He makes sure you can taste everything in the store.
The community table is topped with recycled wine crates. The office looks like a ticket booth in the New York subway. And while the space has an opulent suburban feel, many custom-made details and individual touches catch the eye. More than anything, though, it's the chef ethos that comes through as a source of lasting pleasure. FULL ARTICLE

Smyrna Sandwich shop gives a sucessful formula its own specialty treatment Until recently, the best place to indulge in this kind of kooky food canoodling was Alon's Bakery & Market in Virginia-Highland or Eatzi's Market & Bakery. Now comes Muss & Turner's, a pretty little shop in Smyrna. The Muss comes from Todd Mussman, the former executive chef at Sala, who has joined with Ryan Turner, formerly the food and beverage manager at the East Lake Golf Club.

"The belly rules the mind," says the menu at Muss & Turner's, quoting a Spanish proverb. You'll certainly be able to expand your mind at this new gourmet market and sandwich shop. Muss & Turner's closest intown competitor is Star Provisions. The difference here is the big sandwich menu and the unique availability of fresh take-home meals. And these items blow Eatzi's and Alon's out of the water (although, notably, Muss & Turner's is not selling any bread but baguettes). Belly, which showed promise when it opened, doesn't come close, having taken on the ambiance of a gift shop.
Muss & Turner's is a gorgeous, sensuous space, with lots of blond wood and glittering glass cases with brilliantly colored food. The cases sit before an open kitchen designed to accommodate cooking classes. There's a large communal table that reiterates the overall feeling of - what to call it? - culinary bonding. Foodies are already streaming to the place, from all over the city. And it isn't that convenient to town. FULL ARTICLE

Eat them or lose them. Food lovers are developing a taste for "heritage breeds" ignored by big farms and nearly extinct. Martha Stewart has featured a standard American Bronze on her Thanksgiving cooking show. At Muss & Turner's in suburban Atlanta chef Todd Mussman puts Lazy S Farms lean, dark Red Wattle ham on sandwiches that sell for $11.99 each. "The texture is so silky, it melts on your tongue says Mussman. He tells customers they are saving not just endangered breeds but small farmers too. Says Mussman; "People want to feel good about what they eat." FULL ARTICLE

Sensational sandwiches
Gourmet-to-go moves outside the perimeter offering a wow factor that makes patrons momentarily forget they are in the suburbs. Muss & Turner’s, the buzz-generating gourmet deli and market, is a knockout. Its location in the One Ivy Walk mixed-use development on the Vinings-Smyrna border screams cutesy suburban overkill. Just exactly what are all of those balconies about? But Muss & Turner’s is refreshingly simple without sacrificing style and quality. FULL ARTICLE

It's never a big surprise to see a huge development going up on Cumberland Parkway, but it's not every day that a spiffy new gourmet food emporium sets up shop in one. A new deli and specialty food shop in Smyrna , Muss & Turner's just debuted its $9.99 burger without beef. Called Macedonia Lama Jama, this sandwich stuffs a light, crisp kaiser roll with a ground lamb patty. Not just any lamb, but meat that was hand-delivered by the rancher of Sequatchie Cove Farm in Tennessee .
Chef Todd Mussman, who shares his boundless enthusiasm for every recherché product in his shop, will tell you that the breed of lamb is Katahdin, renowned for its mild, balanced flavor. Mussman studs the burger with roasted garlic cloves and piles it on its roll with arugula, roasted peppers, red onions and a feta-mint spread. The first few bites are pretty amazing --- the flavors have that zap-pow crackle of a good graphic novel. But there's a huge drip factor; it's a burger only briefly, evolving into a knife-and-fork pile of juicy goodness. FULL ARTICLE

Rising out of the asphalt is One Ivy Walk, a pretty little mixed-use development off South Atlanta Road and situated on a stretch of real estate dubbed Smynings-that area between Smyrna and Vinings.
It also houses Muss & Turner's, a brand-new culinary venture that's been attracting quite a bit of attention among the gourmet set. I've already taken three intowners to M&T's and all were impressed. All three said they wished this place was in their respective neighborhoods. FULL ARTICLE

In December, I started receiving colorful e-mails announcing a new gourmet shop in ... Smyrna ? I was intrigued. Longtime chefs Todd Mussman (of South City Kitchen and Sala fame) and Ryan Turner of the East Lake Golf Club have opened a gourmet deli and provisions store in Smyrna . Muss & Turner's sells freshly prepared gourmet deli fare such as sandwiches made with artisan bread and house-cured meats plus from-scratch soups and side dishes, desserts and pastries. Some signature sandwiches include a swanky version of a Philly cheesesteak that includes shiitake mushrooms and Swiss cheese and a Carolina-style pulled-pork barbecue sandwich called the "Swifty" in honor of legendary South City Kitchen chef Jay Swift, who recently left South City to open his own high-end barbecue restaurant called Smokejack. What happens when two chefs leap into the gourmet deli, wine and cheese business? Well, it appears they (chefs Muss and Turner) have taken the basic idea then morphed it into a gastronomic playground pleasing all types, from the casually food passionate to the most fastidious of food snobs.
Worldly meats and decadent cheeses will keep Smrynites from having to make the trek to Star Provisions, but it's M & T's sandwiches that will attract patrons from all over the city. Maybe even that in-town creature Cliff Bostock will make an atypical OTP appearance.
My absolute favorite of the sandwiches is the Macedonia Lama Jama ($9.99) - ground Heritage lamb slathered with a delightful feta mint spread then topped with roasted pimentos and spicy greens. Others offer their high praises to the Gobbler ($8.50), sliced all natural turkey breast topped with tasty Ritz cracker stuffing, cranberry coulis and thyme aioli. FULL ARTICLE
